What a USB Adapter Actually Is
A USB adapter is any physical device that allows a USB connection to work where it otherwise would not. That definition is intentionally broad, because the category is broad. An adapter can change the physical shape of a connector (USB-C to USB-A), convert a USB signal to a different protocol entirely (USB to Ethernet), extend the reach of a cable (USB extension coupler), or break out a single port into multiple ports (a USB hub, which is itself a type of adapter). What unites all of these is the job: making two things with different physical or electrical interfaces talk to each other successfully.
To understand adapters, you must first understand what they are not. A USB cable is a conduit for electrical signals, usually with the same type of connector on both ends. An adapter, by contrast, typically changes something about the connection - the plug geometry, the pinout, or the signaling protocol. A simple passive adapter changes the connector shape without altering the signal. An active adapter contains a chip that converts, amplifies, or re-times the signal to accommodate a different protocol or to extend the physical distance.
Consider a concrete example: you are setting up a new laptop that only has USB-C ports, but your office still uses a USB-A external hard drive. A passive USB-C to USB-A adapter, sometimes called a "dongle," physically adapts the USB-A plug on the drive's cable to fit the USB-C
