Chapter 1: Understanding Vehicle Seat Belt Straps
Let’s establish one fundamental fact before anything else: the seat belt strap is the most safety-critical single item in a typical vehicle interior, yet it will never be designed to be comfortable or even visible. It does one job when it is needed, and it only matters in the fraction of a second when everything else has already gone wrong. A crash at 50 km/h (about 31 mph) exposes an unrestrained occupant to an effective force equivalent to falling from a three-story building. The strap is the only thing standing between that person and the steering wheel, the dashboard, or the windshield.
