Chapter 1: Understanding Vibration Exercise Machines

Vibration exercise machines, often called vibration plates or whole-body vibration platforms, are devices that transmit mechanical vibration to a person standing, sitting, or lying on them. The machine generates a rapid oscillating motion, typically in the 15 to 60 hertz range, which forces the body to respond with repeated muscle contractions. This is the core mechanic of the entire category, and understanding it is the difference between buying a machine based on its marketing claims and buying one based on what it will actually do for you or your business.

A typical machine consists of a platform that vibrates, a motor that drives the platform, a control system for adjusting frequency and sometimes amplitude or acceleration, and a frame that holds everything together. The user stands on the platform, either directly or with shoes on, and the vibration passes through the legs into the rest of the body. The body's natural response is to maintain balance and posture by constantly adjusting muscle tension. This reflexive muscle activity is the physiological basis for the exercise effect.

What the Machine Is Actually Doing
