Chapter 1: Understanding Wax Tarts

A wax tart is a pre-measured, fragrance-infused block of wax designed to be melted in a controlled warmer rather than burned. The user places it in a dish or well, heats it from below or above with a low-wattage element, and the fragrance volatilizes into the room as the wax liquifies. That is the entire physical principle. Unlike a candle, there is no wick, no flame, and no combustion. The wax does not disappear; it evaporates slowly over time, losing scent until it is spent and must be discarded.

This distinction matters more than most users realize. Because the wax is never burned, the scent-release mechanism is fundamentally different. A candle's fragrance is driven by the heat of the flame, which vaporizes the oil in the melt pool and pulls it upward in the convection current of the smoke plume. A wax tart's fragrance is driven by the far lower temperatures of a warmer bulb or plate, typically between 55°C and 75°C (131°F to 167°F). The scent relies on passive evaporation from a warm, liquid surface. This means the fragrance load in the wax, the chemical volatility of the oils used, and the temperature of the warmer are not optional considerations; they are the product itself.
