A weaving shuttle is not a simple wooden boat that carries a bobbin across a web of threads. It is a precisely engineered tool that performs a critical, high-speed mechanical function. To understand it fully, you must start not with the shuttle itself, but with the loom it serves. The purpose of a shuttle is to carry a package of weft yarn, called a quill or bobbin, from one side of the loom to the other. This action, called picking or the pick, places the weft thread between the alternating warp threads, which have been separated to create a space called the shed. The shuttle is the vehicle that delivers the weft, and its design determines how reliably and consistently it can do this, pick after pick, for thousands of repetitions.
It is easy to underestimate the forces at play. On an industrial loom, a boat shuttle can be moving at a speed of 15 to 30 miles per hour. It accelerates from a standstill to this speed in a fraction of a second, driven by the impact of a leather or synthetic picker. It then traverses a hardwood or metal race board, traversing the warp sheet, and is brought to a stop in a receiving box, where its momentum is absorbed by a series of check straps.
