Consider a single copper wire. It conducts electricity, but it is vulnerable. It can be nicked by a sharp metal edge, abraded by vibration against another component, melted by a hot surface, or corroded by chemicals. It can also cause problems of its own, shorting against an adjacent conductor or creating an unserviceable rat's nest. The wire and cable sleeve, the subject of this handbook, is the engineered solution to these vulnerabilities. It is a protective, organizational, and sometimes identifying layer that wraps around a wire or a bundle of wires.

Fundamentally, a cable sleeve is any tubular structure designed to fit over a wire, a cable, or a harness to provide protection and management. But this simple definition belies a complex engineering category. The most basic sleeve is a piece of flexible plastic tubing, like the split loom used in automotive applications. A more advanced example is a tight-fitting, cross-linked polymer tube that shrinks to a fraction of its diameter when heated, squeezing the wires inside into a sealed, insulated bundle. Yet another is a high-temperature fiberglass sleeve, woven tightly enough to create a flexible conduit that can glance off a hot exhaust manifold. Each of these products does the same core thing - it goes on a wire - but each one is engineered for vastly different conditions and performs an entirely different job.
