When you understand how each part contributes to the system, you stop guessing at fixes and start making deliberate, mechanical decisions. The Core Assembly: The Spinning Mass
At its most basic, a yo-yo consists of two halves, or "halves," joined by a central axle. The halves are the primary mass, the part of the system that stores rotational energy. The shape, material, and weight distribution of these halves determine the "center of mass" and the moment of inertia. A high moment of inertia means the yo-yo resists changes to its spin rate. That's why a "wide" yo-yo (with a wider gap between the halves) generally spins longer than a narrow one of the same weight - the mass is distributed further from the rotation axis. You see this in the difference between a competition 1A yo-yo, which is often machined from a single block of aluminum and may have weight rings added to the outer rim, and a simple fixed-axle wood yo-yo for looping tricks.
