Chapter 1: Understanding Yoga & Pilates Blocks

A yoga or Pilates block is a simple tool: a rigid or semi-rigid support, usually rectangular, that you place under your hands, feet, back, or hips to change the geometry of a posture. That simplicity is deceptive. A block changes your relationship to gravity, alters the leverage points of your body, and allows you to practice a pose you otherwise could not access. In practical terms, it is the difference between your hands reaching the floor in a standing forward fold or resting on a solid surface six inches higher. That small distance can make an anterior tilt of the pelvis possible, which protects the lumbar spine.

Blocks are not a crutch for the inflexible, despite the common misconception. They are a tool for adjusting the load path through the body. Consider a classic example: in a standing forward bend, a person with tight hamstrings rounds their lower back to touch the floor. Placing two blocks under the hands at their highest height keeps the spine long and allows the hip joint to do the folding. This is not cheating; it is correct biomechanics. The block compensates for a range-of-motion deficit that no amount of willpower can override. The same logic applies in reverse. A block under the pelvis in a supine bridge position changes the angle of the hip flexors, which changes how much work the glutes do. You are not just "propping yourself up"; you are changing the exercise itself.
