Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

Every team starts with the same problem. You inherit a group of people, or you hire them yourself, and they are smart. They are motivated. They know the goals of the company. And yet, the work gets stuck somewhere between the plan and the execution. Meetings run over because people are jockeying for position. Decisions get reversed because someone was too afraid to object the first time. Deadlines slip because nobody was willing to admit they were lost a week ago, so they panic at the eleventh hour. The Failure of the "Feels" Approach

The common wisdom says that trust is a feeling. It is something warm that grows over time, like moss, or stock options. To build it, the wisdom tells you to go bowling, take a personality test, or sit in a circle and share your "personal values." The theory is that if you get to know each other as humans, the professional barriers will fall, and you will trust each other enough to work well together.
