You did everything right. You read the books about emotional intelligence. You watched the TED Talks on vulnerability. You took the personality test that told you your "leadership style" and framed the results in a nice PDF. You learned the difference between a manager and a leader, and you practiced your "active listening" in a roleplay session that felt like a school play rehearsed by adults wearing lanyards.
