Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have probably already tried the obvious things. You have tried to communicate more. You have planned a "date night" or two, hoping a change of scenery would reignite something. You have maybe even read a book about the "Five Love Languages" or tried to be more "present." And yet, here you are, still feeling like you are on different teams, speaking different dialects, or just managing a household with a roommate. The question is not whether you are trying. The question is whether the stuff you are trying is even designed to work.

Most modern marriage advice is not. It is built on a set of assumptions that are not only wrong but actively harmful. The most common assumption is that a marriage is primarily an emotional state, a feeling that needs to be protected and preserved. If that is true, then the solutions logically follow: do things that make you feel good, express your feelings, and hope that the feelings stay strong enough to weather any storm. This sounds nice, but it your wedding vows are not about a feeling. They are a contract. And like any contract, the terms matter more than the warm fuzzies you had on the day you signed it.
