Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have probably felt this exact frustration. You sit down to write a script for your podcast, and you have two bad options. The first is to write out every single word, word for word. You do this because you want to be prepared and you don't want to ramble. But when you record it, you sound like you are reading a technical manual to a sleepy robot. Your vocal inflection is gone. You pause in the wrong places. You stumble over sentences that look fine on the screen but feel unnatural coming out of your mouth. It takes you three hours to write a ten-minute monologue, and the result is your most boring episode yet.

The second bad option is to ditch the script entirely. You convince yourself that your favorite podcasters are 'just riffing' and that you should 'just be authentic.' So you hit record and talk. Maybe it works for a few minutes. But soon, you lose your train of thought. You repeat yourself. You meander for an hour and edit it down to twelve minutes of usable audio, only to realize you forgot to make your main point. You are not being authentic; you are being unstructured, and your listeners can feel it.
