Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You expected to feel free. Instead, you feel restless. You planned the trips, cleared the garage, and told yourself you would finally read all those books. Six months later, the trips are memories, the garage is cluttered again, and you are binge-watching shows you do not even enjoy. The common wisdom on retirement reinvention is a three-step program: relax, discover your passion, and then pursue it. The relaxation part is easy, for about a month. The passion part is the problem. You have been asked to "find what lights you up" or "discover your true calling" without any method for doing so. This advice assumes that your identity and interests are a hidden treasure chest, waiting to be unlocked, and that all you need is the free time to find the key. This is backwards.
