Day One: Your First Time on the Board
Let's be clear about what today is. Today is not about gliding across the water like you're in a commercial. Today is about getting on the board, getting a feel for it, and getting off with more confidence than you started with. If you've never done this before, you don't need to paddle a mile. You don't need to stand up for an hour. You need to experience the wobble, learn how your body reacts, and discover that the water is not as scary as it looks from the shore.
So let's set the scene. You're at a flat-water spot — a lake, a calm bay, a slow river. You've rented a board, which is the smart move for day one. You've got a life jacket on, whether you think you need it or not. The weather is mild. There's no wind worth mentioning. The water looks smooth, maybe a little glassy. This is the ideal. If you can't find perfection, don't worry — you just want flat water and no boats buzzing around you. This isn't about conquering the ocean; it's about learning what the board feels like under your feet.
Pick up your paddle. Look at it. It's longer than you expected, probably. It has a blade on one end — that's the part that goes in the water. The other end is a handle, or a T-grip. Hold the paddle with one hand on top,
