The Great Misdiagnosis
If you are reading this, you have probably been told a lie. Not a malicious lie, but a comfortable one. You have been told that if you just want it enough, if you have enough willpower, if you try harder - you can overcome your addiction on your own. The narrative is everywhere. It is the dramatic arc of every celebrity interview about sobriety. It is the whispered advice from well-meaning friends who say you just need to "dig deep." It is the silent shame you feel when you fall short, because you believe it is a moral failing.
Here is the problem: the data does not support this narrative. The relapse rates for substance use disorders are staggeringly high - most studies cite figures between 40% and 60% within the first year, and some go much higher. If simple willpower were the answer, those numbers would look very different. But we cling to the myth of the solitary hero because it is simpler than the alternative. It lets us assign blame and credit to individuals. It ignores the messy, complicated, and often uncomfortable fact that humans are profoundly social creatures, and our behavior - especially our addictive behavior - is shaped more by our environment than by our internal resolve.
The lie is that you are an island. The truth is that you are a product of your social ecosystem. And until you understand that,
