Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
You have probably already tried to figure out what you value. Maybe you took a personality test that gave you a four-letter acronym. Perhaps you filled out a journal prompt that asked, "What would you do if money were no object?" You might have attended a workshop where you were asked to sort cards into categories that felt like a deck of "which part of your soul is for sale?" And maybe you walked away with a word - integrity, connection, adventure - and a strong sense that you should be doing something with it.
And then nothing happened.
The word sat on a sticky note for a week. You tried to make decisions based on it, but it floated too high and too wide to be useful. "Does this project align with integrity?" you asked yourself. It was a meaningless question. Of course it did. Everything aligns with a value that broad. It was like trying to navigate a city using a map that just said "earth" on it.
This is not a motivational problem. You are not undisciplined, lazy, or "not ready." The problem is that the tools you were given are fundamentally broken. They are based on a flawed premise about what values are and how they work.
