About this book

From the quiet practicality of a Broadway dressing room to the frantic schedule of a film set and the controlled chaos of a professional haunt, the bald cap is a deceptively simple tool that demands real skill. This handbook is a comprehensive, no-nonsense field guide for the professional and the serious enthusiast. It moves beyond basic application to give you a deep understanding of the materials, the engineering, and the economics of creating a flawless, durable illusion of baldness.

Inside, you will find a detailed breakdown of every cap type, from water-based and solvent-based plastics to gelatin and silicone, with clear specifications on thickness, durability, and response to adhesives. The application chapters offer a step-by-step system for preparation, attachment, blending, and removal, adapted for different materials and performance demands. Each procedure is explained with the kind of concrete detail that prevents costly mistakes, from managing skin oils to securing hairlines that last under hot stage lights or in adverse weather.

The final sections of the book are dedicated to building a sustainable practice. We cover the landscape of major manufacturers, distributors, and private-label suppliers, providing a framework for evaluating cost, quality, and supply chain reliability. For the entrepreneurial reader, we detail viable business models, from simple resale and high-end custom application services to rental fleets and consulting for theater and production companies. This is the only resource you need to treat bald caps as a serious, professional craft.

This is a solid, workmanlike handbook. I've been doing professional makeup for a decade and I was still able to pull a few new things from the application troubleshooting section, specifically the humidity tests for different adhesives. My only real gripe is that the chapter on trends is a little thin, but for the core craft and business advice, it's all there. A good desk reference that'll save you from digging through old forum threads.

I bought this hoping for a lot of detail on silicone caps, and it does cover them, but it felt like the author spent more time on latex, which is getting less common in high-end work. The business chapters are a nice touch and more practical than I expected. It's a good book, but I think the balance is a bit dated, and some of the supplier info will go stale pretty fast. A decent starting point, though.
