About this book

For anyone who drills more than a few holes a day, the difference between a handheld drill and a properly mounted drill stand is the difference between guesswork and precision. This handbook is a plain-spoken, technical reference for professionals and serious hobbyists who need to understand exactly what a drill stand does, how to choose one that will last, and how to get the most accurate results from it. It covers everything from the physics of perpendicularity to the real-world performance differences between cast iron, aluminum, and stamped steel bases.

Inside, you will find a structured breakdown of every major type of drill stand, from portable magnetic-base units to benchtop pillar drills and precision guide systems for doweling and pocket-hole joinery. The book includes practical guidance on reading specification sheets, evaluating runout and column rigidity, and understanding which features are worth paying for and which are marketing noise. Later chapters cover installation, calibration, routine maintenance, and a complete troubleshooting guide for common problems like spindle play, column flex, and table misalignment.

The final third of the book examines the business side, identifying which brands command premium pricing and why, and how you can build a service, rental, or resale operation around this often-overlooked tool category. With a comprehensive FAQ and glossary, this handbook is designed to be the single reference you keep on the shop bench, not a book you read once and shelve.

I've blown money on two cheap drill stands that wobbled so badly I went back to eyeballing holes with a hand drill. The spec-check chapter in this book finally explained why they were junk - the column diameter and spindle runout numbers made it obvious. I picked up a used premium unit after reading the buying section and the difference is night and day. The troubleshooting chapter has already saved me once when my depth stop started slipping. Knocked off a star because the brand chapter feels a bit US-centric and some of the prices are already dating, but the technical core is solid.
