The moment you turn the key in a modern car, you are not simply engaging a starter motor. You are initiating a sequence of events controlled by a network of small computers, each one monitoring physical conditions, making decisions, and sending commands to actuators. This is motor vehicle electronics. It is not a single component or system, but the entire collection of electronic hardware and software that controls, monitors, and protects a vehicle. Consider a very basic operation: pressing the accelerator pedal. In a car from the 1980s, this action pulled a cable that opened a butterfly valve in the throttle body, letting more air into the engine. In a car from the last decade, your foot presses a pedal that moves a magnet over a sensor. This sensor, often a Hall-effect sensor, detects the magnet's position and sends a specific voltage signal to an Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU processes this signal, consults its internal maps for fuel delivery and ignition timing, and sends a command to a stepper motor or servo on the throttle body to open it to a precise angle.
