I'm a working mechanic and I found chapter one to be a solid refresher on the fundamentals. It goes deeper than the usual fluff and actually explains how the CAN bus carries data and why the ground wire is so critical. My only real gripe is that it takes a while to get to the parts on actual troubleshooting, and I was hoping for more wiring diagrams in the first chapter. Still, it's a decent reference to have in the shop.

It's a comprehensive book, but I felt the first chapter was a bit too technical for someone who just wants to understand the basics of their car's electronics. Really appreciated the no-nonsense approach. The opening chapter explains the three different layers (electrical, logical, software) and uses the ABS system as a concrete example of how they all integrate, which made the whole subject click for me. I do think it leans a little heavy on the theoretical side in a few spots, but the practical examples on diagnosing a sensor look like they'll be hugely valuable. Well built, substantial read.
