About this book

The humble footswitch is the most overlooked piece of gear in a guitarist's or bassist's rig, yet it controls the entire character of the amplified sound. This handbook strips away the mystery and marketing around these devices, explaining the difference between latching and momentary switching, the perils of impedance mismatches, and why a simple 'remote button' can sometimes fail to work. With a focus on practical knowledge, this book gives you the diagnostic skills and product knowledge that shop manuals and forum arguments cannot provide.

Inside, you will find a systematic breakdown of switch types, specifications, and quality grades, alongside a clear methodology for choosing the right switch for a specific amplifier model and playing scenario. The maintenance and troubleshooting chapters are filled with step-by-step procedures, from cleaning a scratchy switch to testing a TRS cable with a multimeter, providing skills that will save you money and prevent on-stage failures. For the business-minded reader, there is a dedicated chapter on commercial opportunities, from high-margin resale to profitable repair and consulting services.

The book also looks forward, explaining where the industry is heading, including the rise of digital relay switching, MIDI integration, and wireless systems, and how these changes will affect buying decisions. Written in a clear, neutral, and instructional tone, this is the only resource you need to become an expert on the last link in your signal chain.

★★★★

I bought this on a whim and it's paid for itself already. The troubleshooting chapter alone is worth it - my main amp's footswitch was having intermittent drops and I used their multimeter method to find a bad solder joint in the cable in about ten minutes. It's thorough and dry in the way you want a reference to be. I gave it four stars because the brand comparison chapter felt a little general and the guide on 'business opportunities' was less hands-on than I hoped, but for a working tech like me, the core knowledge is solid and well-organized.
