The Complete Handbook of Ski Boots

It's a solid reference book, no doubt, and I kept it in the shop's break room for the staff. The chapter on maintenance is genuinely useful. But I was hoping for more depth on the business side — the retail margins section felt a bit too general, and the author seems more comfortable talking about shell plastics than about inventory turns or cash flow. Good for the technician, less so for the owner.

I've been fitting boots for almost a decade and I still learned things from this. The first chapter alone is worth it — the way it breaks down how the boot actually transmits force through the cuff and into the ski is the clearest explanation I've come across. I've already made our shop buy copies for the new hires. Finally, a reference that treats the reader like a professional.

There's a lot of good info here, and I appreciate that it isn't written like a corporate brochure. The fit theory is solid and the troubleshooting guide is practical. That said, I found some sections a bit dry and repetitive, especially the specifications chapter. It reads more like a textbook than a handbook at times. Fine if you're training, but if you're just looking to fix a specific problem, you'll be flipping around quite a bit.

I buy for our rental fleet, and Chapter 3 on choosing boots saved me from a mistake — the section on sizing for rental vs. owner-use, and how much flex a rented boot actually needs, is spot on. My only gripe is that some photos would have helped in the maintenance chapter; the text descriptions are good, but a visual would've made it perfect.

I bought this for my husband who's a ski patroller, but I ended up reading most of it myself. The glossary is excellent and the FAQ section is actually useful — they often feel like afterthoughts in other manuals, but here they're well integrated.
