It reads like a colleague who is an engineer explaining things over a bench, not a marketing brochure.

There is good, real information in here, particularly the section on how to read door-frame load limits. It is let down a bit by some sections being very North America-centric in terms of vehicle examples and regulations. The business chapter is pretty thin too, it feels more like a list of ideas than a how-to. I wanted more specifics and someone to name names, but I understand the caution. Not a bad tool for the shelf for the price.

I run a small vehicle upfitting shop and I now have a shared copy in the bay that every installer has read. The chapter on dynamic load testing and the physics of how a rack behaves at highway speeds is crucial for my guys. It has reduced our warranty callbacks significantly. This is not a book for the casual weekend warrior; it is the manual we should have had from day one.

Bought this expecting a general overview, and it's okay if you are a beginner. The first half is pretty introductory if you already know a bit. It's clear and accurate, but the future trends chapter felt a bit speculative. I would have liked more concrete data tables on wind drag coefficients and specific test standards from around the world. Still, I kept it and used the glossary to train my new guy. It's fine, it's just not deep enough for a consultant like me.

This is a book for professionals. I build overland rigs and this has completely changed how I double check my own work. I especially liked the clear explanation of the difference between static and dynamic load ratings; it's a distinction most people don't know. The section on installing on vehicles with factory flush rails vs. door-frame gutter mounts was exactly what I needed. I have a binder now with the maintenance checklists copied out. Worth every cent.

I am a serious hobbyist with a pickup truck, and this was probably more than I needed, but I really appreciated the author's emphasis on safety. The chapter on choosing the rack was smart and easy to follow. I don't necessarily regret the purchase, but the book frequently refers to installation on vans and RVs, which feel a little irrelevant to me. The glossary is the most useful part for me. Three stars because it is a good book but I can't help feeling I was not the core target.
