About this book

From a scum line on a pontoon to decades of calcium scale on a neglected cruiser, the right cleaner saves hours of labor and prevents permanent damage to gelcoat, paint, and metal. This handbook explains how watercraft cleaners actually work: which active ingredients dissolve which soils, why contact time matters, and why a product that works well in freshwater can be the wrong choice for a saltwater slip. It covers the full range of hull materials and finishes, with concrete recommendations for each.

The book guides a buyer through the specification sheet to understand what they are purchasing, including pH, active ingredient concentrations, dilution ratios, and environmental certifications. It provides application procedures for topsides, hull bottoms, engines, upholstery, and canvas. It also covers routine maintenance of cleaning supplies, troubleshooting common application failures, and safe storage.

A final major section treats the business of watercraft cleaning: how brands are positioned, what a fair wholesale price looks like, how to structure a detailing service, and what it takes to private-label a product. It closes with a survey of future regulatory trends and the professional associations and standards that govern the industry.

I run a small detailing business and I've bought a lot of 'complete' guides that turned out to be 70% fluff. This one is not that. The chapter on understanding what you're actually buying in a spec sheet is worth the price alone, and the breakdown of saltwater vs freshwater fouling was directly useful on my next job. The business section is also more realistic than I expected from a handbook. My only minor complaint is the lack of photos, but the text is precise enough that I didn't feel lost. If you do this for a living or you're a perfectionist about your own boat, get it.
